Teambuilding

Teambuilding can be done for many reasons.  Sometimes, a team with little or no experience working together has been assembled for a specific objective and needs to quickly build cohesion.  Alternatively, teams that have been together for a long time may have developed some negative practices and need to re-evaluate their approach to working together.  Other teams find the teambuilding process a positive reinforcement of their strengths and an opportunity to find out more about each other.  Regardless of the specific reason, the teambuilding approach is a valuable method for building a team’s strength and effectiveness and for allowing individual members the opportunity to make a positive contribution.

The teambuilding process will vary according to each group’s particular needs, but also includes some common elements.  Interviews are conducted prior to the teambuilding session to probe the perceptions and attitudes of individual team members.  Information gathered in the interviews provides ideas for topics to be covered in a session with the entire group.  This group session typically lasts one to two days and is held at a corporate retreat center or other site away from the workplace that allows the team to focus and concentrate on working together.  Numerous topics can be covered in a teambuilding session including communication practices, team values, clarifying roles, techniques for building morale and ways to strengthen collaboration and sharing.  Group exercises, facilitated discussions and survey results contribute to the team’s learning experience.

Following the teambuilding sessions, follow-up is typically done with individual group members to address specific areas for self-improvement that will lend to the team’s overall strength.  An additional group session is often held to evaluate the team’s progress toward its objectives.  Some groups will make teambuilding an annual or semi-annual event and explore different facets of teamwork with each session.
